Why a quiet shot needs time

A quiet shot gives the viewer time to discover relationships inside the frame. Its length depends on what changes: a person crossing a room, a reflection moving or a sound arriving from outside the picture. Stillness does not necessarily mean that nothing happens.

Try watching a short sequence without sound, then listening without looking. Each version reveals a different structure. When the two are combined, a cut can feel early or late for reasons that are not visible in the image alone.

There is no universal duration for a useful shot. The question is whether the viewer has enough time to notice the detail that makes the next image meaningful.
